Columbus, Mississippi – At approximately 9:35 AM a train struck a fallen tree near Hamilton in Monroe County, Mississippi resulting in the derailment of ten train cars. Three of those cars are carrying hydrogen peroxide and one is currently leaking and releasing a visible vapor cloud. Approximately 50 to 60 first responders (law enforcement, fire, hazmat, EMA, EMS, etc.) are on now on scene working to contain the release and clear the tracks.
The Monroe County Emergency Operations Center requested that The Salvation Army of Columbus provide feeding and hydration assistance to first responders. Crews will provide water and meals beginning this afternoon and through the night if needed.
“We will maintain a Salvation Army presence as long as we are needed,” said Captain Bert Lind of The Salvation Army in Columbus.
